After a fresh installed Windows 7 beta on my PC. I am quite happy with the overall performance and features presented by this beta.

However, it seemed Windows gadgets didn’t work. Right click on the desktop and select gadgets but nothing happened. I tried to download some gadgets but it said “unspecified error” when I tried to install gadgets.

First of all, I thought it was a bug so I reported it. However, I found the cause and fixed it.

It was the UAC – User Account Control, causing gadgets stop working. After installed Windows 7 beta, I naturally set the level  of UAC to “Never notify”. Apparently it broke the gadgets. After restored the UAC back to default level or level 1. I am able to install and show gadgets on my desktop now.

Wired but worked, You will have to use default level at least level 1 for UAC to get the gadgets worked.

@Matthew, were you able to fix it by following my method?

No… Your “fix” did not work:

Does it require a reboot? UAC gets turned on only when I sell this computer.

I had heard that that was the fix for it, I know there is another work around but wanted to keep the install as clean as possible and not hack it too much (just yet)
I also tried setting UAC to level 1 re-boot, add gadgets, set UAC back to Level 0 and then re-boot no go :( although that would have been too easy!
Cheers

@Andrew,

You will have to keep UAC at level 1 to be able to use gadgets!
Setting UAC back to level 0 will simply disable the gadgets at all again.

I turned UAC to level 1 and gave gadgets a quick run, but I am back to UAC level 0 now since I really don’t use gadgets that much.

Whenever i tried to start gadgets in windows 7, i get the error message “Windows Desktop Gadgets has stopped working” A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available. However, there has never been any solution for this problem, what to do?
